Now celebrating our 67th year!

The Middle Tennessee StrawberryFestival is the single largest and longest running event in Sumner County!  Mark your calendars now for the third Saturday in May and join us for a BERRY good time!

Steeped in a rich, colorful, historical rooted tradition, this Festival has set itself apart.  From the very beginning, this Festival has been a celebration of the strawberry, the exquisit fruit that put Portland, Tennessee on the map, so to speak.

The “berry business” started in the 1880s here in Portland, but the incredible success of this crop in our local soil eventually expanded the berry's popularity to include areas in southern Kentucky and neighboring communities.  At its peak, the berry business had thousands of strawberry-covered acres, employing thousands in the fields picking, hundreds in the loading of wagons, trucks and railroad cars with a virtual 24-hour a day operation for at least 3 weeks of the year.  This enormous undertaking led to Portland being known as a strawberry capital across the country.

In 1929, it is reported that Portland accounted for ALL of the strawberries shipped out of Tennessee!  Although our favorite berry is no longer the primary source of employment or income for the community, it still enjoys its rightful place grown among our local crops.  Portland has grown over the decades and is known today for many different things, however, we are proud to still be called the Strawberry Capital of Middle Tennessee.

Make sure to join us in May for our favorite festival and let us show you, first hand, how sweet our local history truly is!
